Fiesta La Rama

Fiesta de las Nieves / Fiesta de la Rama

On August 5th, the main festival of the town is celebrated in honor of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, whose image is located in the chapel in Puerto de las Nieves. The image remains there all year, except for the days from August 5th to 17th when it is placed in the Parish of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción in the town center. On August 4th, the “Bajada de la Rama” takes place, which is the most popular festive event during these celebrations. Thousands of dancers, accompanied by one of the two local bands, start from the town center and make their way up to the higher part of the town to collect branches and dance with them down to the sanctuary of the Virgen de las Nieves. The festive procession is led by “cabezudos” or papagüevos, which are cardboard figures representing popular characters from the town. They twirl their large hands and playfully hit the crowd, making their way through it. These festivities were declared of National Tourist Interest in 1972.

Fiesta de la Concepción

It is celebrated on December 8th. It is the festival of the parish in the town because the Patron Saint of Agaete is the Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción, with the Virgen de las Nieves being the co-patroness.

Fiesta de San Pedro

It takes place on June 29th at the San Pedro Parish in the Valley of Agaete. The most notable aspect of this festival is the celebration of the “Bajada de la Rama”. On the night of the 27th, pilgrims hike up to the Tamadaba pine forest to cut branches, which they will then bring down at dawn to dance with through the San Pedro neighborhood. These branches are later offered to San Pedro at the end of the procession, with the exception of those made from pennyroyal and thyme, which are kept in homes to alleviate colds and flu.

Carnavales

This festival has a great tradition in the municipality and was even celebrated during years of prohibition. The most notable event is the “Entierro de la Sardina” (Burial of the Sardine), a procession filled with laughter and tears that accompanies the sardine to its burning, marking the beginning of Lent.

Fiesta de la Milagrosa

These celebrations take place in the month of October in the El Risco neighborhood.

Fiesta de Sta. Teresita

It takes place on the third Sunday of June in the hamlet of El Hornillo.

Fiesta del Pîlar

It is celebrated on October 12th in the Barrio del Pilar, in the town center.

Fiesta de Fátima

It is celebrated on October 12th in the Vecindad de Enfrente in the Valley of Agaete.

Fiesta de San Sebastián

Navidad
